As a person whose experiences and identities do not fit neatly into categories, I have encountered the challenges of navigating a society that operates on the assumption that ‘one size fits all’ works for everyone. I strive to create a different kind of space in my therapeutic approach. I view therapy as a collaborative process, recognizing that each unique individual requires different kinds of support, which can change over time. I am a multiracial (half white and half Japanese), cisgender, queer woman, with an immigrant parent and firsthand understanding of the complexities of navigating a multicultural family. My personal experience lends itself to professional curiosity and empathy in my role as a therapist.
I have specialized training in multicultural psychology, LGBTQ+ psychology, and treatment of trauma (including adult survivors of childhood trauma). I utilize intersectional feminist therapy as the framework from which I integrate relational, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and trauma focused interventions. Feminist therapy for me includes the dismantling of internalized oppressive hierarchies and this work often involves discussion of various social locations and how cultural/societal narratives have impacted us.
I earned a doctorate in clinical psychology from the Graduate School of Professional Psychology at the University of Denver, completed my internship at the Center for Multicultural Training in Psychology at Boston Medical Center, and completed my postdoctoral residency at AIDS Care Group/Mosaic Medical Center for LGBTQ+ Health & Wellness.
