Meet Kim

Kim Konopka, LCSW (NY/NJ/CA)

they/them

I don’t believe we seek out therapy because we are “flawed” or because we need to be “fixed.” Instead, I view therapy as an act of empowerment when navigating challenging systems, -isms, and circumstances. My own lived experience as a neurodivergent Korean adoptee drives my commitment to practicing from a place that holds space for - and celebrates- each person’s multiple and intersecting identities.

In my work, I don’t operate from the role of “expert.” I see myself as a compassionate collaborator who shows up with curiosity and care as clients navigate the cusps of their growing edges. Shedding light on our hidden spots and stretching beyond our current edges - in all of its excitement, tenderness, and discomfort- leads us to new places, new practices, and new ways of being with ourselves and others.

Some of the theoretical perspectives that inform my work include: anti-oppressive practices, disability, healing and transformative justice, intersectionality, relational approaches, mindfulness, and trauma-focused somatic-based modalities including elements of Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR), and Brainspotting.

I owe what I know about vulnerability and resilience to those who have been brave enough to share therapeutic space with me. I’m grateful for the spaces where I both learn and teach- and where I am simultaneously challenged, and held, in accountability and with care.

I work primarily with fellow neurodivergent LGBTQIA+ people of color, and transracial/transnational adoptees at these intersections who are navigating the trauma of oppressive systems, challenging relational dynamics, transitions/changes, and/or self-exploration/ emergent identities. My practice is entirely telehealth/ virtual only, and I work with residents of New York, New Jersey and California. Please learn more about my practice here: www.yungmeepsychotherapy.com
