I am a queer, white, femme, Jewish therapist currently based in Brooklyn, New York. I primarily came to work as a therapist after my own healing experiences in therapy. Therapy has always reminded me that healing occurs in community and in relationship. Therapy has made me feel less alone, has made space for the wholeness of who I am, and has complicated my life in beautiful ways that I feel grateful for.
When I entered the field of social work, I worked with survivors of intimate partner violence in crisis. I often wondered what my role in this work was as a queer person. I found that LGBTQ+ folks were often left out of conversations around abusive relationships. I wondered what it would be like to examine the impact of sexuality, race, class, and gender when exploring the complexity of abusive relationships and survivorship. Today, the intersections of identities between myself and my clients are incredibly important in the therapeutic work that I do. I am committed to sifting through the messiness and connection with my clients and examining the role that systems play in therapeutic work.
Sex therapy is another important part of my practice. I am currently in training as a sex therapist and work with folks exploring their relationship to sex and sexuality. I have felt my own shame around discussing sex and sexuality throughout my life and to be able to witness and sit in healing with others is incredibly liberating.
If you live in New York and are interested in individual or couples therapy, you can find out more about my practice and how to reach me through my website: www.daniellaacker.com.
