Asasia Richardson, LCSW (NY)
she/her
Hello, I’m Asasia! I’m a biracial (Black and white) woman psychotherapist, based in New York City. I believe the foundation of therapy is the relationship between therapist and client, and I center that relationship in our work together. My style is curious, compassionate, transparent, and collaborative. We will work as partners to navigate challenges, gain insight into your inner experiences and patterns, process your feelings, and develop new coping skills and strategies. Therapy with me isn’t about “fixing” – I believe each person already has skills and strengths that have helped you make it this far, and together we can collaborate to develop new skills, while adjusting those that no longer serve you.
I practice from a trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, anti-racist lens, which means I approach therapy with the understanding and recognition that people do not exist in a vacuum. Your experiences, upbringing, culture, race, sexuality, gender, family, and other intersecting parts of your identity shape you, your relationships, family dynamics, work life, and of course, your mental health. I take great joy from working with people of all different backgrounds and experiences, and I center working with those of marginalized or oppressed identities, especially BIPOC and LGBTQ+ folks, to create a therapeutic space that is affirming and culturally responsive.
I pull from a variety of techniques and modalities as a therapist to individualize therapy for each person. These approaches include ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy), CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), psychodynamic, EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing), attachment theory, and systems theory. People most often work with me to navigate difficulties associated with anxiety, depression, life transitions, dysfunctional family relationships and childhoods, racial and cultural identity, gender, sexual assault, and trauma. I look forward to getting to know you!
